The Brazilian Institute of Architects (IAB), through its Department of Bahia (IAB-BA), and the School of Architecture from the Federal University of Bahia (FAUFBA), through its Postgraduate Program in Architecture and Urbanism (PPG-AU) and the Professional Master in Conservation and Restoration of Monuments and Historical Sites (MP-CECRE), invite professionals and researchers working in the fields of teaching, research, design, construction works and management of the built heritage to participate in ArquiMemória 5 – International Meeting on Conservation of Built Heritage.
ArquiMemória 5 gives continuity to the homonymous events promoted by IAB at the 1980s, when the first two meetings were organized (São Paulo, 1981, and Belo Horizonte, 1987). In June 2008, after 21 years, IAB reconvened professionals and researchers working on the conservation of architectural and urban heritage to discuss the field at ArquiMemória 3, conducted by IAB-BA and several partner institutions. This event brought together more than 600 professionals from all regions of Brazil and from various countries of America and Europe in Salvador (Bahia) to discuss important issues related to the conservation of our heritage. In May 2013, IAB promoted ArquiMemória 4, again in Salvador and through IAB-BA, this time with an internationally effective character, bringing together more than 700 professionals and researchers from all over Brazil and from 14 countries, consolidating the event as the main meeting on conservation of the built heritage held in Brazil.
ArquiMemória 5 will be held in Salvador, Bahia, between November 27th and December 1st, 2017 and will celebrate the eight decades of institutionalization of the cultural heritage conservation policy in Brazil: on November 30th, 2017, it will complete 80 years from the beginning of the activity of the Decree-Law no. 25, which established the instrument of listing of protected cultural properties, named “tombamento”, and organized the National Historic and Artistic Heritage Service (SPHAN), now IPHAN, which was created some months before. The event will also celebrate the 50th anniversary of the creation of the Foundation for the Cultural and Artistic Heritage of Bahia (FPAC), now IPAC, the State of Bahia agency for cultural heritage conservation.
ArquiMemória 5 is also a preparatory event for the 27th World Congress of Architects one of the most important event of world architecture, to be held in Rio de Janeiro on July 2020, promoted by the International Union of Architects (UIA) and the Brazilian Institute of Architects (IAB).
